India vs South Africa, LIVE Cricket Score, 2nd Test at Pune: Agarwal, Pujara consolidate after early jitters

11:05 (IST)

After 18 overs,India 58/1 ( Mayank Agarwal 30 , Cheteshwar Pujara 5)

After a couple of deliveries that move away, Philander gets one to move back into Pujara, who is actually just waiting for the delivery on his pads, working it behind square for a single. Later in the over, Agarwal plays the straight drive but Philander is able to stop and unleash a throw at the batsman's end, Agarwal runs out of the way. One run from the over.

11:02 (IST)

After 17 overs,India 57/1 ( Mayank Agarwal 30 , Cheteshwar Pujara 4)

Nortje continues to bowl his fourth over. He keeps bowling full, in fact Pujara even digs out a yorker early in the over. The three fast bowlers have bowled three different lengths. Rabada has bowled the short of a good length region, while Philander has maintained his nagging length, around the good length region while Nortje has been slightly fuller length. There seems to be an issue with his landing and after some sawdust has been placed near his landing area he resumes his over and ends up leaking seven runs of the final two balls. Pujara's drive through extra cover earns three before Agarwal drives it past the cover fielder for another boundary off Nortje.

11:01 (IST)

FOUR! Once again it is the fuller length outside off and Agarwal is not going to miss out. There is a cover fielder in place but Agarwal has opened his face of the bat a touch to direct his drive wide.

10:54 (IST)

After 16 overs,India 50/1 ( Mayank Agarwal 26 , Cheteshwar Pujara 1)

Pujara is off the mark with a single past square leg of his 13th delivery of the innings, also bringing up India's 50. Philander follows it up with five dots to Agarwal.

10:51 (IST)

After 15 overs,India 49/1 ( Mayank Agarwal 26 , Cheteshwar Pujara 0)

Nortje breaches the 150-kmph on the speed gun but bowling is not just about pace as his length has been extremely poor to top it off, Agarwal has unfurled three cracking shots, dispatching the ball to long off and then a couple of balls to cover fence.

10:47 (IST)

FOUR! And another one! Nortje lands one full, outside off and Agarwal is once again on the front foot to drive it through the covers for third boundary of the over.

10:45 (IST)

FOUR! Again a touch too full from Nortje, this time it is slightly wide of off stump as well and Agarwal has driven this nicely through the off stump of back to back deliveries.

10:44 (IST)

FOUR! That's a good-looking shot! Length ball, angling in from Nortje and Agarwal presents a full face of the bat to drive the ball on the rise through mid off.

10:42 (IST)

After 14 overs,India 37/1 ( Mayank Agarwal 14 , Cheteshwar Pujara 0)

Philander returns for his second spell. Three men in the slip cordon. First and second slip in a more tractional position while there is a a very square gully, almost a fourth slip in place. A single on the leg side for Agarwal to end the over.

10:39 (IST)

After 13 overs,India 36/1 ( Mayank Agarwal 13 , Cheteshwar Pujara 0)

Nortje lines up a maiden to Pujara, who has now played 12 deliveries and yet to get off the mark. Umpires call for drinks. Good first hour of Test cricket.

10:37 (IST)

After 12 overs,India 36/1 ( Mayank Agarwal 13 , Cheteshwar Pujara 0)

Couple of no balls in the over, third of the day as Rabada keeps overstepping. Pujara has an early reprieve. Three runs from the over, with Pujara yet to get off the mark.

10:33 (IST)

DROPPED! Straight to Bavuma at forward short leg and he isn't able to hold on. Let me start by saying it was a tough chance as it came straight of the face of the bat of Pujara. The ball was angled into the middle and leg stump with Pujara flicking it in the air, Bavuma who is slightly behind isn't able cling on to ball that came a rapid pace. Into his midriff and out. Early life for Pujara.

10:29 (IST)

After 11 overs,India 34/1 ( Mayank Agarwal 13 , Cheteshwar Pujara 0)

Pujara joins Mayank at the crease. There was a stoppage in play after Agarwal was struck on his head by a short delivery from Nortje. The deflection takes the ball to fine leg fence for four byes. Physio is out to conduct some routine checks before the play resumes. Agarwal drives the next ball for a boundary to say 'all's good.' Eight runs from the over.

10:25 (IST)

FOUR! Agarwal quashing any doubts regarding his fitness after a knock on his helmet. Nortje didn't follow up his bouncer with a length delivery, wide outside off and Agarwal flays his hands to drive it fiercely through the covers.

10:22 (IST)

After 10 overs,India 25/1 ( Mayank Agarwal 9 , )

Rabada responding to Faf's call of getting the longer spell by drawing the first wicket of the match. He has earned his wicket as Rohit falls off the last ball of the 10th over.

10:18 (IST)

Gone. Peach of a delivery from Rabada and you would expect this on a pitch like this. It was a matter of time. Jury still out on Rohit's credentials as Test opener perhaps but after 300 runs in the last Test, you cannot judge him harshly and that too almost instantly.

10:18 (IST)

OUT! Rabada has his man! Super delivery, right over the off stump, the length was on the shorter side, a little bit of steep bounce as well. Rohit had to play at it and the outside edge goes straight to De Kock. First wicket for South Africa. Much deseved for Rabada. After twin centuries in the first Test, early end for Rohit in Pune.

Rohit c de Kock b Rabada 14(35)

10:14 (IST)

After 9 overs,India 23/0 ( Mayank Agarwal 9 , Rohit Sharma 12)

Only four overs for Philander in his probing opening spell as Anrich Nortje replaces him into the attack to begin his Test career. He cranks good pace of 145+ for the most part of the over, but an unfortunate boundary comes off the bottom edge. Slightly wayward to begin with but decent end to the over.

10:14 (IST)

FOUR! Anrich Nortje bowls it short, outside off  but Agarwal looks to punch of the backfoot gets the toe end of the bat with the ball bouncing before the keeper and first slip and none of the two was able to stop it.

10:11 (IST)

After 8 overs,India 19/0 ( Mayank Agarwal 5 , Rohit Sharma 12)

Rabada continues to pound the short of a length area outside off, beats Rohit Sharma with a beauty. Another lucky boundary to third man to end another frustrating over for Proteas.

10:08 (IST)

FOUR! Short of a good length from Rabada, around off stump, the ball was slanted into Rohit Sharma, looks like it just straighten a little, opening up the batsman. The ball takes the shoulder of the bat, taking the outside edge and sneaking through the gap between the cordon and the gully.

10:04 (IST)

After 7 overs,India 14/0 ( Mayank Agarwal 5 , Rohit Sharma 8)

The 'ohhs' and 'ahhs' continue in Philander's over but no 'yes' or 'got him'. Rohit and Mayank had  to negate similar testing spell in Vizag where despite bowling their hearts out Philander and Rabada didn't pick any wickets in their opening spell and then it was sheer domination by the Indian openers that saw them rack up 317 runs for the first-wicket stand. Philander completes his fourth over of the spell, this time a maiden.

10:04 (IST)

A real test for the Indian openers here, albeit very different from what we experience overseas. This movement should rest down in an hour or so. Overseas, it would go on forever and there will be much more pronounced movement. Agarwal almost edged behind, and Rohit's patience has been tested as he tried to pull Rabada, dropping short of the fielder.

10:01 (IST)

After 6 overs,India 14/0 ( Mayank Agarwal 5 , Rohit Sharma 8)

Rabada complimenting Philander really well here. Keeping the batsmen on their toes. Rohit was in two minds to play or leave at one delivery, and retracts pretty late with the ball hitting the bottom edge, but the ball bouncing in front of the cordon. Rabada goes short, targetting his body for the final ball of the over and Rohit is slightly late on the pull, not in complete control, there are cries of 'catch' but the ball bounces just short of the fielder. Chancy start for India.

09:58 (IST)

After 5 overs,India 13/0 ( Mayank Agarwal 5 , Rohit Sharma 7)

Vernon Philander has been threatening to take a wicket in his first two overs and he almost got one with a nippy in decker. Beats Agarwal's inside edge and hits Agarwal's front pad around the knee roll but the umpire has deemed it not out and despite a very confident appeal in fact it was a celebrappeal from the bowler. Faf opts for a review and Mayank Agarwal thanks his stars for surviving on umpire's call. Close call. Philander is dangerously close to picking up a wicket.

09:52 (IST)

Nervy start once again for India. Poke from Agarwal flies into the gap between gully and third slip. Lucky miss there for the opener, whose double hundred in the first Test somehow got lost in the Rohit-Ashwin-Shami narrative.

09:51 (IST)

After 4 overs,India 12/0 ( Mayank Agarwal 5 , Rohit Sharma 6)

Rabada manages to produce an edge from Mayank Agarwal but to no avail in terms of a wicket. In fact the ball runs down to third man boundary. Streaky start for Agarwal. KG oversteps the next ball. Five runs of it.

09:49 (IST)

Rohit Sharma's batting average in home Tests:

1st innings : 104.00

2nd innings : 87.50

09:49 (IST)

Another sad toss to lose for South Africa and they look set up for a hard grind. Different pitch though, which reflects in both teams opting for a third seam option. Out of the blue, Umesh Yadav gets to play a Test after December 2018.

09:48 (IST)

FOUR! Thick outside edge but safe! Short of a length delivery, outside off stump and Mayank pokes at it, away from his body and the ball goes through the gap between third slip and gully, in fact it was fairly close to the diving gully fielder, but away from his grasp. First boundary of the Indian innings.

09:46 (IST)

After 3 overs,India 7/0 ( Mayank Agarwal 1 , Rohit Sharma 6)

With an umbrella of three slips and a gully in waiting, Philander starts his second over with a lovely delivery that leaves away after landing on the off stump, just beating Rohit Sharma's outside edge. Rohit looks to curb Philander's seam movement by walking down the pitch. Philander continues to hit the nagging length, maintaining tight lines, he even hits Rohit's pads but the ball has come off an inside edge. Good stuff from South Africa's opening bowler. Rohit was able to clip a couple of runs to fine leg with a ball that was a little too straight.

09:40 (IST)

After 2 overs,India 5/0 ( Mayank Agarwal 1 , Rohit Sharma 4)

Kagiso Rabada bowls the second over. Starts off with three outside off deliveries to Rohit which results in no runs. He doesn't hit the line right on the fourth and Rohit pushes towards deep mid-wicket for three runs. Mayank leaves the last two balls.

So three runs from Rabada's first over.

09:36 (IST)

After 1 overs,India 2/0 ( Mayank Agarwal 1 , Rohit Sharma 1)

Runs off the first ball. Philander bowls on the legs and Mayank pushes the ball towards fine-leg for a single. Good comeback from the bowler for the second ball. Pitched up and Rohit doesn't want to play it. Similar kind of delivery for the third and this time, Rohit plays and it takes an outside edge. The batsmen take a single. Philander finishes off with a beauty outside off-stump. He beats Mayank with a perfect good length ball.

09:32 (IST)

09:02 (IST)

Toss report

Virat Kohli has won the toss and India will bat first.

08:58 (IST)

Pitch report: "The pitch is dry despite all the rain because it was well covered. That dryness will assist spinners but the grass will hold the pitch on first day and it will be a good pitch to bat on on Day 1. There could be delayed start because of squishy outfield," says Sunil Gavaskar.

08:55 (IST)

"We always comeback," is what South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis said ahead of the second match. He's pretty confident of his team's chances going into the match. Click here to read all what he had to say.

It will match 50 for Virat Kohli as Test captain. A win in second Test and 2-0 lead in series would be the best gift.

08:14 (IST)

The first-ever Test match in Pune between India and Australia back in 2017 saw spinners dominating the contest which ended in just three days. Aussies' Steve O' Keefe picked six wickets in each of his innings while Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin shared 12 wickets in two innings between them. Can we expect more of spin playing a crucial part in this Test as well? Read the match preview by Jigar Mehta here.

08:00 (IST)

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the opening day's action of the second Test between India and South Africa in Pune.

Virat Kohli and Co have taken the 1-0 lead in the series by winning the first Test at Visakhapatnam. They will aim to dominate Day 1 of the second Test and eventually win the match and also clinch the Test series.

We will get you all the updates from the Test so stay tuned.

India vs South Africa, LIVE Cricket Score, Test Match, Day 1 at Pune, Latest Updates: After a couple of deliveries that move away, Philander gets one to move back into Pujara, who is actually just waiting for the delivery on his pads, working it behind square for a single. Later in the over, Agarwal plays the straight drive but Philander is able to stop and unleash a throw at the batsman's end, Agarwal runs out of the way. One run from the over.

Preview: Improving on near perfection would be India's aim while building on the small positives from a huge loss will be South Africa's focus when the two mismatched sides clash in the second Test starting here from Thursday.

Virat Kohli's men ticked almost all the boxes during their 203-run win in the opening encounter in Visakhapatnam and they would like to maintain the same intensity in their bid to seal the series in Pune itself.

It is difficult to improve upon a perfect show but trust Kohli to find a new challenge for his team in his pursuit of excellence.

It certainly won't be a bad idea against an opposition that doesn't have the wherewithal to pose consistent challenge over five days.

It was at this very ground that the Indian Test team endured its last batting collapse at home, against Australia in 2017 on a rank turner where off-spinner Nathan Lyon made lives miserable.

Chances are slim that a pitch of that nature will be on offer for the upcoming game and even if curator Pandurang Salgaokar offers anything remotely close, chances of India, armed with two seasoned spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, might finish it off in less than four days.

The dogged Dean Elgar and the elegant Quinton de Kock have shown a lot of character with their hundreds in the first Test but chances of a Steve Smith like 2017 batting masterclass on a dodgy track may not be possible.

The hosts showcased an all-round performance to clinch victory in the first of the three Tests against South Africa in Visakhapatnam earlier this week.

Chasing 395, South Africa were bowled out for 191 (63.5 overs) as Shami and Ravindra Jadeja (4-87) took nine wickets between them.

In the first innings, Ravichandran Ashwin enjoyed a spell of 7-145 as the hosts saw off the visitors for 431 after declaring at 502-7.

As many as five centuries were scored in the first Test, including a historic double ton from Mayank Agarwal. While Rohit Sharma scored a century in both innings, Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock were the others who registered tons.
